UWA hosts University of Ghana delegation

November 16, 2018

The University of Western Australia (UWA) hosted a Visiting Delegation from the University of Ghana from 5-7 November 2018. This followed an earlier visit led by the Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, on 22 May 2018, during which the two institutions renewed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU). The recent November visit was in order to build on this past engagement and for both institutions to discuss and facilitate further engagement on academic and cultural interchanges in teaching, research, and other activities.

The Ghanaian delegation consisted of Professor Samuel Kwame Offei (Pro-Vice Chancellor,  Academic and Student Affairs), Professor Eric Yirenkyi Danquah (Director, West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement), Professor Boateng Onwona-Agyeman (Dean, School of Engineering Sciences), Dr Wazi Apoh (Head, Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies), and Professor Andrew Adjei (Vice Chancellor, Strategic Teams). The delegation had fruitful discussions with colleagues and students from across UWA faculties and disciplines, including the executive committee and fellows of the Africa Research and Engagement Centre (AfREC).

On 6 November, Professor Danquah presented a seminar on Strategic Partnerships for Agricultural Innovation and Entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa. The seminar, which shared some of the numerous success stories of the contribution graduates from the WACCI program have made towards enhanced regional food security, was very well-attended. Dr Apoh also presented a seminar on the same day on The Current State of Archaeology and Heritage Studies in Ghana, which was also well-attended.

The visit concluded with great enthusiasm for ongoing Africa-focused research and engagement between UWA and the University of Ghana.
