Leading African scientist and global expert in Plant Genetics appointed at UWA as Adjunct Professor and AfREC Research Fellow

The University of Western Australia has appointed Professor Eric Yirenkyi Danquah, the founder and director of West Africa Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI), as Adjunct Professor at the UWA Institute of Agriculture and an AfREC Research Fellow. Professor Danquah is currently a Professor of Plant Genetics at the College of Basic and Applied Sciences, University of Ghana.

 

 

 

He has been at the forefront of ensuring food and crop security in Africa, and has received numerous awards including the University of Ghana Distinguished Award for Meritorious Service and the 2018 World Agriculture Prize from the Global Confederation of Higher Education Associations for Agricultural and Life Sciences (GCHERA).

 

 

 

In November 2018, Professor Danquah was a part of a delegation visiting UWA from the University of Ghana, during which he gave a public lecture  on “Strategic Partnerships for Agricultural Innovation and Entrepreneurship in sub-Saharan Africa.” This appointment is in recognition of his significant contribution to food security in Africa, and to the work and activities of the University.

 

UWA and the University of Ghana are co-members of both the Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) and the Worldwide Universities Network (WUN). UWA was the Co-Chair of the WUN Global Africa Group from 2015-18 and the Group was formally launched at the University of Ghana in 2017. AfREC welcomes Prof. Danquah to our team of researchers doing innovative and impactful research on and in Africa and we look forward to close collaboration and engagement.
