WA Minister for Women’s Interests to speak at launch of new AfREC-OAC Women’s leadership program

February 28, 2019

Hon. Simone McGurk MLA, WA Minister for Women’s Interests, will be the keynote speaker at the launch the WA African Women’s Leadership, Empowerment & Development (A-LEAD) program, a new initiative co-convened by UWA AfREC and the Organisation of African Communities in WA (OAC).

The Gala Dinner launch event on 9 May, timed to coincide with and celebrate International Women’s Day 2019 and with the theme ‘Together we Influence and Empower’, will also launch the OAC’s new Women’s Department, headed by Marie-Claire Evenor.

The WA A-LEAD program seeks to create opportunities to develop WA African-Australian women’s leadership and networking capacities. The program builds on a collaborative AfREC-OAC WA public engagement event on ‘African Women and Leadership’ (2017) and UWA’s sponsorship of the African Women in Leadership Award (2018) as part of the OAC’s annual WA African Community Awards. The A-LEAD Program is based on the Melbourne-based African Think Tank’s African Leadership Development Program (ALDP), led by AfREC Advisory Board Member Haileluel Gebre-selassie OAM, whose aim is to help aspiring African-Australian leaders develop their leadership and networking skills. The A-LEAD Program does this with a focus on women’s empowerment in WA.

Following the launch, there will be a three month period of detailed consultations with WA African communities on program design and participant recruitment, before a pilot of the program is rolled out from July-December 2019. The A-LEAD program is currently co-funded by OAC and UWA (Faculty of Arts, Business, Law and Education + UWA Public Policy Institute).

More information and tickets for the launch event, held at The RISE, Maylands, are available from Eventbrite.
