UWA to host Australia Africa Universities Network Forum 2019

March 26, 2019

UWA will again host the annual flagship Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) Australia Forum & AGM 2019, which will take place on Monday 2 September as part of the annual national Australia Africa Week 2019 in Perth. UWA has hosted the AAUN Forum & AGM each year since 2016 and the event regularly draws 100 participants from across academia, government, industry and African communities. AfREC was formally launched at the Forum in 2018.

Itself launched in 2012, the AAUN focuses engagement of Australian universities in sub-Saharan Africa to enable the provision of specific expertise across areas of priority for Australia and Africa. Key objectives for the network are to provide an intelligence and advisory portal for government institutions, the corporate sector and media to access, via a ‘one-stop-shop’, a range of expertise on Africa; to develop institutional research partnerships on Africa; to develop capacity building and training programs for example in governance, public sector reform, education, mining, agriculture and health; to produce innovative policy solutions through position papers with key academics, non-government organisations, business and political representatives; and to provide post-training support for African scholars, including an alumni network, linking with African communities in Australia as appropriate. More information can be found in the AAUN Annual Report 2017-18. AfREC Research Fellow and Director, UWA Institute of Agriculture, Prof. Kadambot Siddique, represents UWA on the AAUN Steering Committee.

The 2019 Forum will feature a range of keynote speakers, government officials, diplomats, researchers, students and academic leaders, with thematic sessions showcasing collaborative research and policy engagement being done by AAUN members and partners across both continents. Registration will be open soon via the AAUN website. AfREC would like to thank the Office of the DVC-Research for its continued support for UWA hosting the AAUN Annual Australia Forum.

The AAUN has also just announced the opening of its 2019 Partnership & Research Development Fund (PRDF) grants round. The AAUN PRDF provides one year of catalytic seed funding of AUD $10K per project. From the five earlier annual calls, the PRDF has funded 43 projects which are currently in progress, or finished. We expect to fund 6-10 projects in 2019. The deadline for the proposals is 30 April 2019, but potential applicants are encouraged to send a brief outline (one page max) to aaun.events@sydney.edu.au by 10 April 2019. We expect to announce allocations by 30 June 2019. Please visit the AAUN PRDF 2019 webpage for more details, and also for downloading the relevant documents for the application.
