UWA to co-convene regional coloured gemstones forum in Nairobi
The University of Western Australia and the University of Queensland, through their partnership in the Minerals and Energy for Development Alliance (MEfDA), are co-hosting the regional forum East and Southern African Coloured Gemstones: From Mine to Market – Challenges and Opportunities from 10-12 July 2019 in Nairobi, Kenya.
A number of East and Southern African countries contribute to the global coloured gemstone market with yearly estimates of coloured gemstone retail sales valued at $18-21 billion. This Forum is timely as there is increasing global pressure for improved transparency and traceability of mined products and a number of governments are pursuing policies to enhance local value addition.
The Alumni Forum is being supported by the Australian Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) through a grant to UWA to maintain ongoing engagement of mining professionals that have participated in training programs funded by the Australian government.
The Forum will bring alumni of Australian programs from East and Southern Africa and invited participants from industry, academia, civil society and government to share good practices and discuss innovative and practical solutions to advance dialogue and collaboration on coloured gemstones.
