AfREC and OAC Co-Convene A-LEAD Open Forum on Emotional Intelligence
On 8 February 2020, AfREC and the Organisation of African Communities in WA (OAC) co-convened at UWA a second Open Forum as part of the WA African Women’s Leadership, Empowerment & Development (A-LEAD) program 2019-20. This Open Forum was themed Emotional Intelligence and focused on issues including managing inter-personal relations, such as within the family or workplace, understanding and navigating social and cultural contexts, appreciating the value of empathy, and how to use emotional intelligence to inform communication and decision-making
The Forum was convened by Ms Salome Mbenjele, Secretary, OAC Women’s Department, and featured as the keynote speaker former WA Premier and Federal Minister Professor Carmen Lawrence from the UWA School of Psychological Science. The Forum also included an engaging participatory role play on understanding and managing challenging inter-family dynamics, an inspiring spoken-word performance by Santi Mandera and addresses by Dr Nalishebo Meebelo, Dr Casty Nyaga and Ms Marie-Claire Evenor.
Following the Open Forum, the A-LEAD 2019-20 program featured its final regular session on financial planning and management, and then will conclude with post-classroom participant mentoring projects and the graduation of the first A-LEAD cohort at a ceremony during the OAC’s International Women’s Day Gala on 14 March.
