AfREC Fellow Wins New Grant to Collaborate with University of Nairobi

Congratulations to AfREC Research Fellow Dr Amin Mugera, a Senior Lecturer in the UWA School of Agriculture and Environment and the UWA Institute of Agriculture, who has just won a new Australia Africa Universities Network (AAUN) Partnership and Research Development Fund (PRDF) grant to undertake a collaborative project with Prof. John Mburu, Head of Department of Agricultural Economics at the University of Nairobi, Kenya, entitled ‘Performance Measurement for Social Scientists in Agriculture: Theory and Practice’. Early Career Research Dr Steele West from UWA will also be involved in the project, along with other regional partners.

“This project aims to develop the capacity of Early Career Researchers in sub-Saharan Africa to conduct empirical research and produce evidence-based policies to address the challenges facing agriculture in sub-Saharan Africa. The project will develop and deliver a Masterclass course in applied productivity and efficiency analysis to at least 25 social scientists in agriculture. Mentorship will be provided to enable the trainees to get published in peer-reviewed journals. This type of training is essential in producing evidence-based policies. Overall, the project will contribute to achieving the intertwined ACIAR and AAUN goal of capacity building and policy capability in Africa.”

Details and timing of the Masterclass program in Nairobi will be confirmed in due course.
