AfREC Fellow Leads Author Discussion on ‘Growing up African in Australia’

On 22 February 2020, UWA hosted a discussion on the 2019 Black Inc. Books' anthology Growing Up African In Australia as part of the Perth Festival 2020. The discussion was moderated by AfREC Postgraduate Fellow Tinashe Jakwa and featured two of the book’s editors in Maxine Beneba Clarke and Ahmed Yussuf.

The book highlights the diverse stories and experiences of Australians of African heritage. The session was well attended with a range of questions raised in the audience Q&A, followed by book sales and signings by the editors. Perth-based South African writer Sisonke Msimang was the Curator: Literature and Ideas at the Perth Festival 2020 and themed the festival program Land. Money. Power. Sex.

AfREC had previously launched the book on Africa Day in May 2019 featuring a panel discussion including Ahmed Yussuf, WA-based contributors and young African-Australians.
